What Is a Donor-Advised Fund?
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a charitable giving account that allows a donor to make an irrevocable charitable contribution, receive a charitable tax receipt and recommend grants to eligible charities over time.
Think of a DAF as a dedicated home for a donor’s philanthropy. Rather than writing individual cheques to many charities throughout the year, a donor makes contributions to a single fund, receives a tax receipt at the time of the gift and then recommends grants to the causes they care about on their own schedule.
The basic structure
A donor-advised fund is established within a registered charitable organization, often called the sponsor. The sponsor holds legal control of the charitable assets and is responsible for administering the program. The donor retains advisory privileges: the ability to recommend how the assets are invested and where grants are directed.
This separation is what makes the structure work. The contribution is complete and irrevocable when it is made, which is why the donor receives a charitable tax receipt immediately. The granting can then unfold over months, years or generations.
Why donors use them
- Simplicity. One account, one receipt trail and one point of administration for all of a donor’s giving.
- Timing flexibility. The decision to give is separated from the decision of where and when to grant.
- Tax efficiency. Contributions of appreciated publicly traded securities may receive favourable tax treatment in Canada.
